Summary of Conor Grennan’s motivation for volunteering in Nepal

Driven by boredom, Connor Grennan, decided to pursue new adventures of his interest. This came after he had worked for a very long time in the United States and piled up a huge stash of cash. His job at East West, too, had become boring, it had lost the intrigue he had before. He decided that it was time to go out to the world, and spur those close to him to feel that he still existed and had it together. He opted not to look for a new job and chose to forfeit his education. This man made a break to have his friends and peers to approve of him. He decided to travel to Nepal and work as a volunteer at an orphanage. This, he felt, would be a well-deserved one-year vacation. The volunteering exercise was supposed to last for two months, and according to the brochure, a luxurious vacation would follow the volunteering exercise. He did not know that what was to transpire would change his life forever. On the other handWhen Conor Grennan newly found friend falls ill and is hospitalized with an unknown illness, he regrets his decision to volunteer in Nepal. Conor realizes that the job of nurturing the Nepali orphans is hectic and demanding task. It is virtually impossible for him to have an active and fun-filled social life with the duty of attending to the orphans; they require almost all his time. In addition to this, the standards of living are dire and not conducive for healthy living. This is due to stressed sanitation facilities and harsh temperature conditions. Food supply to the orphanage is insufficient. All these contribute to his emotional instability. He regrets his decision and would not want to come back to the orphanage, but is touched to think that the children in the orphanage have to experience those conditions each day. He decides he has to return after the volunteering exercise is over. He is even made to bow to questions about the possibility that he will return. Though he is resistant at first, he is reunited with the orphans eventually. This happens after he realizes that orphans would always want the volunteers to return but cannot express it. They always feel abandoned but hold on the hope that the volunteers will come back. This is how he eventually caves down to make a promise to return to the orphanage the following year. Finally, Conor Grennan’s initial aim was to please his friends and make them change their view of him through taking an exceptional trip around the world. This led him to volunteer at the Nepali orphanage. In addition to his motives of volunteering, he is motivated to return to the orphanage the following year by the loneliness of the orphans and their longing to be revisited. Though Conor thought that the trip would be a one-off thing, he is changed by his experience. He is later to make plans of revisiting the orphanage for the sake of the orphans. It changes his motives totally.
